Bess Wohl’s acclaimed comedy Small Mouth Sounds has been doing the rounds worldwide before it makes it’s Broadway debut next year 2027. It is playing an exclusive, highly immersive season at the Bille Brown Theatre in South Brisbane.
The Nudity
Official advisories from the Queensland Theatre Company explicitly note that this production contains mature themes, mild infrequent coarse language, and full-frontal male nudity.
- The Context: The play takes place entirely at a silent wellness retreat in the woods where six city-dwelling strangers are forced to confront their internal demons without speaking. The nudity occurs naturally as part of the characters navigating the rules, awkward scenarios, and raw human vulnerabilities of communal living in nature.
- Age Guidance: The production is strictly recommended for audiences aged 15 and older.
The Show Concept & Immersive Tech
What makes this specific run at the Bille Brown Theatre unique is its groundbreaking audio format, developed in collaboration with the Brisbane-based tech-performance collective Counterpilot.
Because the script features virtually no spoken dialogue, every audience member is equipped with a personal pair of high-fidelity headphones. This live sound engineering allows you to intimately hear the tiniest details on stage—from heavy sighs, awkward rustles, and surreptitious whispers to muffled ugly-crying and yoga meltdowns.

In Bess Wohl’s script for Small Mouth Sounds, the full-frontal male nudity is written specifically into the storyline for the character of Rodney.
For the Queensland Theatre production at the Bille Brown Theatre, Rodney is portrayed by Australian actor Stephen Geronimos.
Context of the Scene
Rodney is a hyper-spiritual, deeply intense yoga teacher who attends the silent retreat. The script dictates that during an awkward, unintended interaction near a lake or bath area at the retreat, his character strips down entirely, leading to the full-frontal moment designed to highlight the raw, uncomfortable, and exposed nature of the characters’ emotional journeys.
